On our March trip to Chiapas we had some disappointments with one of
our stone mills. The one that we had placed in Xoquil Ucum was
confiscated by the Zapatistas. We are hoping that in due time we will
be able to get it back.
In October of 1992 we noticed that
there were no returns coming from our mill at Xoquil Ucum. When our
local leadership researched the situation, they discovered that the
people where refusing to pay for service. I placed the mill in
probation with an evaluation date set for December. In December the
situation had deteriorated to a point that we had to re-evaluate the
effectiveness of the mill in that location. This March we decided to go
to Xoquil Ucum and take the mill back so that it could be placed in a
reasonably productive area. We were threatened with violence if we
tried to remove it. At this time the mill remains there until we can
figure out how to remove it without causing a major incident.
For
the first time we have ordered a three horsepower mill, to be delivered
to Simojovel. This mill will provide support for our top leadership; up
to this point, they have not received any funding to support their
ministry.
